The Ghana Young Academy (GhYA) has thrown its weight behind the newly launched Ghana National Research Fund (GNRF), describing it as a landmark investment in the country’s research and innovation ecosystem, while pressing for dedicated funding tracks for the nation’s early- and mid-career scientists.

In a position statement issued following the Fund’s launch on 16 June 2026, GhYA — the national network of outstanding early- and mid-career researchers — said the GNRF, established under the Ghana National Research Fund Act, 2020 (Act 1056), demonstrates government’s commitment to harnessing science, technology and innovation for national development.

The Academy commended President John Dramani Mahama for spearheading the launch, and acknowledged the Ministry of Education, the GNRF Governing Board and other stakeholders for operationalizing the Fund. It also singled out Professor Eric Yirenkyi Danquah, Chairperson of the Governing Board, and Professor Abigail Opoku Mensah, the Fund’s Acting Administrator, for their roles in shaping the institution’s direction and credibility.

A Call for Dedicated Pathways
Despite its welcome of the milestone, GhYA was direct about what it expects next: that the Fund build competitive, ring-fenced funding pathways specifically for early- and mid-career researchers, whom it described as a critical segment of Ghana’s scientific workforce driving knowledge generation, innovation, scientist training, and solutions to national challenges in health, agriculture, energy, climate change, education and industry.

The Academy is calling on the GNRF to ensure its operations are accessible, transparent, merit-based, inclusive and responsive to emerging researchers, with specific funding windows established for early-career investigator grants and mid-career research leadership awards, alongside support for interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects.

It also wants the Fund to back research infrastructure and laboratory access, innovation, commercialization and technology transfer, scientific publication and dissemination, and science-policy and community-engagement initiatives.

GhYA also urged the Fund to promote equitable access across institutions, disciplines, regions and gender groups, so that talented researchers nationwide — not only those at established or well-resourced institutions — can contribute to the country’s development agenda.

“An Investment in the Nation’s Future”
The Academy said it stands ready to work with the GNRF, government agencies, academia, industry and development partners to strengthen Ghana’s research ecosystem and maximize the Fund’s impact.

“When Ghana invests in its researchers, Ghana invests in innovation, development, and a brighter future for all,” the statement concluded.

The Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana has accused former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo of misleading the public by creating the impression that she sustained gunshot wounds during the enstoolment ceremony of its new leader.

In a statement, the church said the incident occurred on June 21, 2026, at its Kwabenya property after a lawful church event.

According to the mission, Ms. Safo arrived at the venue and forcefully drove her vehicle into the entrance gates, striking and causing substantial damage to two metallic gates.

“At the time of the incident, numerous worshippers and invited guests were present within the premises, including individuals seated in close proximity to the entrance,” the statement said.

The mission added that the act posed a serious risk to life and property, noting that security personnel intervened to prevent further escalation.

The church said it has taken note of unverified media reports and social media claims that Ms. Safo was shot by her brother during the incident.

“We categorically reject these allegations as false and misleading. To the best of our knowledge and based on information presently available to us, no such shooting occurred,” it stated.

The Kristo Asafo Mission is calling on authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into all aspects of the incident.

It also urged the public to refrain from drawing conclusions based on unverified social media reports and to allow law enforcement to establish the facts through due process.

The mission reiterated its commitment to peace, truth, the rule of law, and the safety of all persons who attend its events.

The police report stated that the former lawmaker alleged that upon arriving at her late father’s residence around 10:15 a.m., her brother, Nana Kwadwo Sarfo Akofena, ordered security personnel stationed at the property to open fire on her.

“On reaching the said residence, her brother Nana Kwadwo Sarfo Akofena ordered his security guards to open fire at her,” the police communication said.

The report further indicated that Adwoa Sarfo sustained gunshot injuries to her left ear and right hand during the incident and subsequently reported the matter to the police for action.

As part of the initial response, police issued her with a medical form to seek treatment while the vehicle involved was retained for ballistic examination.

The SITREP disclosed that the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander led a team of officers to the hospital, where they met Adwoa Sarfo receiving treatment. During her interaction with investigators, she reportedly explained that executives of the Cristo Asafo Mission intended to outdoor her brother, Nana Kwadwo Sarfo Akofena, as leader of the church.

However, according to her account, the matter had been taken to court and the church executives had been restrained from proceeding with the programme.

The report noted that Adwoa Sarfo later received information suggesting that the event was nevertheless being organised at her brother’s residence at Kwabenya Point One. She subsequently visited the location to assess the situation.

According to the police communication, she alleged that her brother and the Deputy General Secretary of the church, Kwasi Adjei, directed security personnel at the residence to shoot her.

The SITREP stated that security guards on duty at the house allegedly fired into her vehicle, resulting in the injuries she sustained.

Following the incident, police arrested six suspects identified as Tamakloe Safo Jehoshaphat, 38; Richard Ayertey, 38; Badu Enoch, 34; Amoakwah Sam, 37; Kwabena Safo, 35; and Gideon Safo, 35.

Police also retrieved five pump-action guns and one sidearm from the suspects.

The communication indicated that the suspects have since been handed over to the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters for further investigations, while officers from the Crime Scene Management Unit processed the scene.

It further revealed that Nana Kwadwo Sarfo Akofena and Kwasi Adjei, who allegedly ordered the shooting, have been invited by police to report on Monday, June 22, 2026.

The Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Donkor, also visited the victim at the hospital as part of the police response.

According to the SITREP, Adwoa Sarfo has since been transferred to the 37 Military Hospital for further medical care.

Police say investigations into the attempted murder case are ongoing, with further updates expected as inquiries continue.

While the official results are yet to be released, reports suggest the 29-year-old is a major doubt for Tuesday's meeting with England in Boston after training separately from the rest of the squad on Saturday.

Ati-Zigi produced an outstanding performance against Panama before picking up the injury, making several key saves to help Ghana secure all three points.

Speaking to Ghanafa.org, the goalkeeping coach revealed the goalkeeper is making encouraging progress, with his condition being assessed daily in consultation with head coach Carlos Queiroz and the Black Stars' medical team.

"We're extremely happy with his progress. It's day by day. Obviously, this is a medical issue collaborated with head coach Carlos Queiroz, so we'll take it session by session," he said.

"We're optimistic, and the decision will be made at the right time. But one thing is for sure, we always stress the team above the individual. Any decision we make is in the best interest of the team."

Should Ati-Zigi fail to recover in time, Benjamin Asare and Joseph Anang are available to step in, while Solomon Agbasi remains with the squad in camp despite not being part of Ghana's official 26-man World Cup roster.

Ghana face England knowing another positive result would significantly boost their hopes of reaching the knockout stages after opening their campaign with a victory over Panama.

Send your news stories to [email protected] and via WhatsApp on +233 546310076.

The reason is coach Carlos Queiroz likes to do a lot of finishing and crossing, and it's important we have four so they can rotate. There's less repetition for each one of them, and that keeps them healthy and sharp."

He also praised the atmosphere within the goalkeeping group, saying healthy competition has gone hand in hand with strong unity.

"We've created a competitive yet positive environment. They have certain characteristics and a style of play, and we're exposing our goalkeepers to those conditions," he said.

"We're preparing them not only for the timing of catching and boxing, but also the physical challenge they'll face. I have no doubt our goalkeepers are prepared for all the conditions against England."

The goalkeeping coach also dismissed speculation over Ghana's decision to travel with four goalkeepers, explaining it was a deliberate choice by head coach Carlos Queiroz. Although Solomon Agbasi is not part of the official 26-man World Cup squad, he remains with the team in camp alongside Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Benjamin Asare and Joseph Anang.

"I'm extremely pleased with the goalkeepers we have. The reason is that coach Carlos Queiroz likes to do a lot of finishing and crossing drills, and it's important we have four so they can rotate. There's less repetition for each of them, which keeps them healthy and sharp."

He added that every training session is tailored to the strengths of Ghana's next opponents.

"Panama is different to England. England will be different to Croatia. We analyse each opponent, identify their dangerous players and attacking patterns, then incorporate that into training."

Ghana opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama and will face England knowing another positive result would put them in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.

Send your news stories to [email protected] and via WhatsApp on +233 546310076.
